Perspective Post: 2020, a Year of Reckoning for (Post-COVID) Cheerleading in Singapore

The year is 2022. The cities are quiet and the streets are empty. A SafeEntry poster floats and lands onto the ground. A humanoid police drone patrols the street as a street lamp flickers in the distance. In a dark corner, by a dilapidated, abandoned playground, the faintest sound can barely be heard: ... 5 6 7 8.......”
Police Drone: “PEE PU PEE PU... YOU ARE VIOLATING SECTION 532a MANDATORY STAY HOME NOTICE... STOP WHAT YOU ARE DOING AND STAY ON THE GROUND... RESISTANCE IS FUTILE!” ...
-

Okay, let’s not worry about this unlikely, almost 100% impossible future. Let’s talk about now.

The year is 2020.

COVID-19, Circuit-Breaker, Safe-Distancing; these words are no stranger to our daily news feeds, amongst other (related) news. Every day: “Singapore reports XXX cases of COVID-19, with XX community cases.” We are all keeping our fingers crossed for the day we see a consistent dip in XXX and XX, but we’re not there yet. We’re working towards it, but not there yet.

No doubt, COVID-19 has impacted our lives in many ways. Some, more than others. Our lives as we know it have changed drastically, and many of us are still trying to adjust.

Cheerleading, has come to a grinding halt in the face of the pandemic. The postponement and subsequent cancellation of CASNCC and ACIC 2020 was testament to that. Since then, all forms of cheerleading has been disallowed as the country implemented drastic measures to break the circuit. Only until recently, physical conditioning and tumbling training was allowed, in line with the nation’s reopening.

Jokes, we all know it’s a necessary decision.

PRE-COVID-19 CHEER SCENE

Let’s be honest. Before 2020, it’d be stretch to put cheerleading in the Top 100 growing, up-and-coming booming industries. Actually, probably not even Top 1000 perhaps. The point is, even before COVID-19, Singapore cheerleading was not what it was before.

Back in the day, youth in Singapore polytechnics had the option to pick up cheerleading as an extra-curricular sport, recognised by the educational institute. However, current circumstances dictate that this shouldn’t be the case anymore. SP Gusto, TP Blazers, RP Rexaz, NYP Grizzlers, and NP Magnum have since closed down, all of which had rich cultures that produced many talented cheerleaders. Currently, youth are able to pick up cheerleading in universities, which forms the main bulk of the fresh batch of cheerleaders every year and even then, hall and school teams face tremendous difficulty in recruiting new members.

So people started to question: Where else can we find young athletes to replace the ageing cheer population? (Cheerleaders typically have a relatively short lifespan. 98% of cheerleaders retire after the age of 30 [unverified and unconfirmed statistic - don’t take our word for it]) Because let’s face it. It’s not easy for a team to juggle training the competition team and nurturing completely new cheerleaders at the same time. (How should a team prioritise? …But this is a whole other conversation for another time). There were definitely more efforts by some teams to recruit and groom the next generation of cheerleaders… but the question is... is it enough?

Let’s look at why this pandemic has worried many cheerleaders about the future of the sport.

Picture 3.png

1. No Training

As of the time of writing this article, physical conditioning and tumbling training is allowed. Due to the extremely close contact nature of the sport, it is unlikely that stunting (partner stunts, group stunts, pyramids) will resume anytime soon, without the risk of transmission to everyone on the mats. But we hope it will resume soon. We really do. Maybe if we wear masks, gloves, face shields... who’re we kidding.

Stunting has always been the highlight, and backbone of cheerleading, something unique to us. An individual interested in tumbling might turn to gymnastics, tricking, or even parkour. But if you’re interested in stacking humans onto humans and maybe stacking even more humans, while spinning, twisting and flipping, cheerleading is the place to be (with the arguable exception of acrobatics, that is not as well-established in Singapore at the moment).

How many people have set personal goals and invested so much time in stunting, only to find their passion slowly erode? #stayhome. One can only wait so long, before starting to think about other life goals. 👶🏻👶🏻👶🏻

Picture 4.png

2. No Team Competitions

So CASNCC and ACIC 2020 has been postponed, and cancelled. What about CASNCC and ACIC 2021? CAS explained in a post that CASNCC and ACIC will resume sometime in 2021. But does anyone really know when that will be?

Team Competition has always been the boss stage of a cheerleading career, for most. That is why most teams peg their season to CASNCC/ACIC. It gives cheerleaders purpose, a goal to work towards, and a key milestone for many to plan their retirement from the sport.

As discussed, cheerleading is a sport with extremely close contact. Currently, sports that allow for safe distancing measures, are allowed to carry on with 5 pax at a time.
How exactly would the shape and form of cheerleading look like when it is finally allowed to resume? Will we be limited to a 5 pax group? And how often are we able to change the members of the 5 pax group

CAS had previously shared that the readiness of individual athletes and the team is an important factor for them to decide whether to hold the competition or not. For good reason, of course. What is the minimum lead team that teams are allowed to train for a competition then? At this rate, CASNCC/ACIC April 2020 seems mighty unlikely. Thankfully, CAS is already in contact with local teams to gather feedback from the ground on a more feasible timeline.

OUTLOOK

So, the question right now remains: How will Singapore cheerleading look like in 1, 2, or 3 years’ time? The future is uncertain, and nobody will know for sure. But let’s try to make a good guess here.

The Positive Side.✅
Stunting will be allowed to resume soon, in small group sessions. Tumbling lessons will continue. Cheerleaders will slowly but surely, start to crawl out of quarantine. Some form of e-competition is created, video submission for partner stunt, group stunt, or small team cat is encouraged.

The social media presence for cheerleading begins to grow, on Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok. The youth in Singapore is influenced and inspired, and new cheerleader recruits start to sign up. Existing teams (especially school teams) continue to maintain lifeline, allowing for newer teams to start up. Sg cheer survives.

The Not-So-Positive Side.❌
Stunting will be allowed to resume not-so-soon, in small group sessions. Tumbling lessons will continue. Cheerleaders start to crawl out of quarantine, only to be reminded how out of touch they are. They think about the future they have built during the circuit breaker period, and wonder where does cheer fit into it now. Some stay on. Most, crawl back. Teams struggle to keep sufficient members to piece up a team routine, and subsequently decided that it’s the end of the road... No happily ever after.

Possible? Nobody knows... the future, as ever, remains mysterious and unknown. It would be wiser for us to focus our attention on the present instead of worrying for the future.

WAY FORWARD

So what are some things that can save the sport that we love?

Individually, we’ve got to keep fit. Fit physically, and fit mentally. Everyone seems to be doing some form of #cofitnotcovid home workout program, which is keeping everyone on their toes, waiting for the day to finally cheer again. To keep mentally fit, is to find ways and means to keep the cheer passion alive. Dream stunt? Perfect routine? That flyer/base you’ve always wanted to impress? That coach you always wanted to prove wrong? There are many different reasons why people stay in the sport, we just have to find one that is relevant, and always remind ourselves why we cheer in the first place.

As a community, perhaps it is time to focus on perfecting basic stunts, instead of pushing for new stunts. It has been widely acknowledged that the outlook of cheer is widely dependant on how many new cheerleaders there are. As such, the priority should not be on pushing the difficulty of cheer in Sg, but instead focus on perfecting simpler stunts that are naturally more inclusive to new cheerleaders. This is of course, not mutually exclusive.

On an organisational level, one item on the to-do list should be to source for sustainable influx of new cheerleaders. DECS is a great example of such a solution. Perhaps private education institutions, collaboration with youth agencies, or partnership with government sports organisations might be the way to go. Of course, the cost and effort required may not be as simple as all of us think.

However, the moooooooooooooooooooost important of them all, is that all cheerleaders should respect current pandemic measures, implemented by the government and CAS. The last thing we want is for cheerleading to be thrown into the spotlight for irresponsible behaviour. If there’s only one thing you take away from this, is that we’re all in this together. We’ve got to work together to tide our way out of this crisis, for a better tomorrow.

Who knows when will an international vaccine save us from our current situation? Till then - Stay Home, Stay Safe.

Season 19/20 Road to Nationals!

Season 19/20 was an exciting journey for Wildcards, with many different highs, lows and hoops to jump through - the BIGGEST being COVID-19. As with all other teams, the cancellation of ACIC + CASNCC 2020 was disappointing but we trained hard, we worked hard and we are proud to show our journey along our Road to Nationals and our Showcase.

A huge round of applause and thank you to all members and alumni who supported us and put up this amazing routine. It was truly an unforgettable season filled with both tears and laughter. With that… here’s our gag reel for some LOLs

And as Singapore enters into Phase 2 post-circuit breaker, we look forward to being on the mats once again. Stay healthy, stay safe and stay fit WILDFAM!

Jayson & Ariel's Wedding

On 12 January 2020 this year, a very special couple celebrated their love and dedication to each other. Jayson and Ariel are no strangers to Wildcards and have been important members of the Wildcards family for many years.

To Jayson and Ariel, thank you for letting us be a part of your momentous occasion. Wishing you a blessed marriage. #Wangtomarryshan

Check out the following video for our performance at the wedding!

Annual Kukup Trip

Kukup trip was months ago, but the memories lingers as though it was just yesterday. We gathered early in the morning for departure. Upon arrival, we were served with lunch where the (perpetually) ravenous members ate beyond their fill before we made our way to our accommodation for the night.

The place was spacious and fit all of us comfortably. Time spent there were simply: we ate and plated the whole day, much unlike the work-laden days spend in Singapore. Karaoke, mahjong and cycling- and not forgot the highlight of the day, the fireworks and releasing of the wish lanterns. As did the lanterns soar, we too wished the same for out job prospects, for love and for our team in the upcoming ACIC competition. #WCTSG#Goingfor10th. After everything, we continued to have supper, followed by a must have drinking session.

It was bittersweet as we made our way back home the next morning. The trip was short but we were are able to bond and create memories.

Wildcards Blood Donation Drive @ Bishan CC!

One fine training…

We received news that there would be a blood donation drive to be held at Bishan CC! Of course, Wildcards wouldn’t miss it for the world! So one 29/6 Saturday, we all went to donate blood after training!

A chance to save lives! In general, 14 units of blood is needed every hour, for surgery, medicine, haematology, accidents, and emergencies. Something that cost us only 15 minutes of our time can save a life.

Registration!! We have to fill up a looooong list of questions to ensure we are suitable for donating blood! This process took about half an hour but we were accompanied by H-TWO-o, Milo, and biscuits hehe.

We had a fun time filling up the questionnaire too! “Since when you went to Vietnam how come i don’t know!”

Some were nervous… never donated blood before, it could be a daunting task. How would it feel? What could possibly go wrong? What if the blood overflow out of the bag? What is mosquito fly into my bloodstream? Erm.

We had a blast today!! We were glad to be able to give back to the community that has supported us in so many ways, and do a good deed at the same time!

Everyday, blood is needed for medical reasons. We hope our contributions today will make a difference to somebody who needs it! And we hope that we would never encounter a situation when we run out of blood when somebody desperately needs it.

Introducing, Wildcards Committee 2019/20

Hello Hello everybirdy!

As Wildcards AGM concluded on 18 May 2019, we are pleased to announce our new committee for Season 19/20!!

No time to waste! First up!!

Kim.jpg

Head Coach

Kimberly Chen

Wildcard since 2016

Don’t be fooled by her small stature, she is actually one hella woman compressed into her small frame. She is often overlooked by people due to her vertical challenges. She overcomes this by being able to holler louder than 10 guys combined. If she finds out you are late for training in Bishan, she will shout so loud you can hear it from Jurong and some say JB. Good stuff.

Nigel.jpg

Coach

Nigel Sim

Wildcards Since 2014

Not an uncommon face in the cheer scene, he is known fondly to many as the stunt magician. But in his older years, he spends his time trying to plant his seeds impart his magic to all other cheerleaders (Oops). He will make your dream come true, unless your dream is to grow taller. Unfortunately he cannot help you with that as he is still trying to figure that formula out. 10/10 Base

ZY.jpg

Coach

Lum Zheng Yao

Wildcard since 2018

The new beng on the block yo. Dont be fooled by his gangsta appearance. This man is a man of justice. Legend has it that he once ‘summon’ a base for wearing a ugly yellow shirt to training, disrupting the peace. Better dont pray pray around him. Having Zheng Yao as the coach, he helps to make up for what Kim might lack (eg. Physical size), so that the coaches can work together as a team. Safeguarding every day

boulder.jpg

Vice-Chairman

Boulder Loong

Wildcard since 2013

Know to many as Broooulder. Mr Looooooong. Boner Loong. 怪叔叔. Right now we refer to him as Mr Loong. One thing is for sure. When you ask him how strong is his loyalty for Wildcards. His reply will always be “As solid as a boulder.” Being the most experience dude on the team, he can give solid advice to the coaches (As solid as a boulder). Being the constant for Wildcards every year, he will surely value add to the team in many ways.

ryne.jpg

Captain

Rynell Lee

Wildcard since 2018

Hot stuff Captain right here. Adding to the list of all the hot stuff Captains. Has nobody realised that Wildcard’s Captains has always been some hot stuff?? Rynell is a man of many talents. By day he works to keep our nation safe. By night he becomes the lemonade man delivering sour beverages ;) to thirsty girls in our nation. Thank you for your service Sir! Rynell’s bubbly personality always never fails to brighten people’s day! Captain bubbles.

anna.jpg

Vice-Captain

Annabella Tan

Wildcard since 2018

Our Vice-Captain Bella! She may be known by some as the ice-queen in Wildcards, as her face looks like ready to murder you when she is not smiling. But she is a really soft girl and will immediately soften up if you give her her favorite food, POTATO. (Did i mention she loves to eat potato? Her fav is potato without skin ;)). Having many years of cheer experience, she can surely value add in many ways! Also, if she ever strangles you just sing “Let it go, let it go…”

Cheryl.jpg

Team Manager

Cheryl Chuah

Wildcard since 2018

Being the Team manager is not a simple task. Cheryl has replied so many emails and written so many documents that her biceps has grown twice in size since she took up the post (as seen in the above picture). If anybody out there wants to achieve similar results, don’t hesitate to contact her! Better not mess with her… because she is also known as Cheryl Jam. As in Jam your face up your a***. Oooooooo

raiha.jpg

Business Manager

Raihan Osman

Wildcard since 2017

Raihan is also not a new face to the cheer scene! Being very talented in gymnastics, he has helped many girls bend over backwards…. *ahem* I meant he has helped many cheerleaders get their gymnastic elements. Yes. Being multi-talented, he can be a base, flyer, or both (?). He is in charge of getting business for Wildcards! When he cannot find business, he spends his time tekan-ing Wildcards members with his grueling PT sessions.

joyce.jpg

Finance Manager

Joyce Lim

Wildcard since 2017

Ah Lian alert!! Joyce is also a familiar face, but familiar because you may have seen her at the coffeeshop, basketball court, arcade… kidding. She may be the most lovable petite girl on the team… but there is nothing petite about her *****. I meant there is nothing petite about her financial skills. That is why she is our Financial manager! O$P$ or else… Huat Huat Huat!

Clinton.jpg

Social Media Manager

Clinton Chua

Wildcard since 2015

Clinton is also sometimes known as Mr. Tomato. This is because there is something similar to Clinton and Tomatoes - both are good for you ;). Clinton might have a tough guy demeanor, but is actually a really soft and nice guy on the inside. Just like a tomato! Slurps.

Presenting, Wildcards Committee 2019/2020!!

Bring Wildcards to greater heights and greater glory!! Huat ah!

WILDCARDS CASNCC & ACIC 2019

7th April 2019, Sunday.

This day struck excitement for some, but rendered fear for many. It was the day of reckoning, judgement of a year’s worth of sweat, blood and tears. A lot was dependent on today, and the stress was immeasurable.

At the crack of dawn, the phone alarm rang through the silent morning, and on the screen it reminded us that today was ACIC and CASNCC, the yearly affair that tested our determination, our mettle, and our ability to do what we do.

Many turned in early the night before, in hopes of getting a good nights sleep. But ironically, everyone barely got a wink of sleep, in anticipation of the day to come.

Tired, groggy, and dazed, we pulled ourselves out of bed. As we looked in the mirror for the first time that day, we expected to find a half-asleep creature, as we would any other regular day.

But it was not any other day.

As always, we arrived early to the competition. “Spectacular achievement is always preceded by unspectacular preparation.”
― Robert Schuller

Gears on smiles on, we were raring to warm-up.

IMG
IMG_7150.jpg
IMG_7168.jpg

“It was a regular day. No different from any other training. Nothing odd, nothing special.”

These phrases were commonly exchanged during the warm-up. The effort to calm the nerves and to pretend that it really was just a regular day was commendable . But in the cool morning breeze, everyone could feel the unmistakably tense and jittery atmosphere.

Few words were spoken. In our mind, everyone knew what needed to be done.

The preparation process included looking fresh and ready to fight the battle ahead. Girls did their hair and makeup to look their best for the judges.

Comforting words and laughter lightened the mood, and calmed the nerves just a little.

IMG_7203.jpg
IMG_7212.jpg

Time works in a funny way. During happier times, it zooms right past without having the chance to appreciate the moment. While waiting to perform a 2 and a half minute routine, made up of a year of pain and suffering, it goes at a painstakingly slow pace.

Sitting around, twiddling thumbs, and reading text messages were some of the ways we used to pass the uncomfortable experience.

But alas, there was no avoiding the imminent… The final moment approached.

Walking through the terminal passage, anxiety and unease started to build. Palms became sweaty, and a lump started to grow at the back of the throat, making it difficult to talk. It also seemed impossible to stop shaking. Gosh

Reflecting on all the sacrifices made up to this moment, everyone knew… that there were only 2 outcomes.

IMG_7269.jpg
Standing upon the final rehearsal, of the routine we did a 100 times, and a 1000 more in our heads.

Standing upon the final rehearsal, of the routine we did a 100 times, and a 1000 more in our heads.

Doubtful and unsettled, we do what we can to remain calm.

Doubtful and unsettled, we do what we can to remain calm.

At the final moment, our minds were blank. We kept the fear and doubt at bay, and trusted our bodies to do what we have to.

At the final moment, our minds were blank. We kept the fear and doubt at bay, and trusted our bodies to do what we have to.

Time to give 100%, and nothing less. When this is over, you can’t give any more, no matter how much you want to.

Time to give 100%, and nothing less. When this is over, you can’t give any more, no matter how much you want to.

Some fumbled, but kept going. They knew that giving up would seal their fate, and it was not a fate they desired.

IMG_7319.jpg
IMG_7321.jpg

The crowd roared. The Hall shook. The applause deafening.

It was a good feeling. It was a validation and acknowledgement of what they had put out. And we knew, the audience was entertained. Individually, it comforted us. We feared a silent audience at the end. Thankfully, it was not the case.

And just like that, 2 and half minutes was over. And just like that, another year, another season was over.

But the question lingering on everybody’s mind was… was it enough?

IMG_7323.jpg
IMG_7329.jpg

Nevertheless, it was a huge relief.

No more struggles, no more uncertainty. Nothing more could be done, and it soon it was time to rest.

We could only wait and hope we did our best, and that our best was enough.

Waiting anxiously, the outcome of a year’s worth of work.

Waiting anxiously, the outcome of a year’s worth of work.

In the final moments, the coach reminded the team:“We did our best. I am very proud of all of you, and you should be too.Whatever the outcome, we will take it graciously.”

In the final moments, the coach reminded the team:

“We did our best. I am very proud of all of you, and you should be too.

Whatever the outcome, we will take it graciously.”

In a tense situation, nothing feels better than a brothers embrace. Counting down to the final moments.

In a tense situation, nothing feels better than a brothers embrace. Counting down to the final moments.

Trust the process, trust the organisation. In the name of Wildcards, let the sun shine it’s victorious ray of light on this team.

“And the Champion…

of ACIC and CASNCC 2019 …

Goes to…

TEAM WILDCARDS !!”

IMG_7398.jpg
IMG_7407.jpg
IMG_7410.jpg

TEAM WILDCARDS!”

It rang in our heads again and again. It was euphoria.

No words can adequately describe the feeling.

We cried, hugged each other, and cheered like there was no tomorrow. For tomorrow didn’t matter. Nothing else matters. What mattered was… that our hard work had paid off. That we achieved our goal we set a year ago, as a team.

The sweet feeling of victory, unmistakable, unforgettable.

WILDCARDS ANNUAL FOUNDERS DAY

What’s up beautiful people!

On the 25th of August, Wildcards celebrated our Annual Founder’s Day (26 Aug)! Founder’s day is very important to us, because it marked the beginning of Wildcards. Fast forward 10 years, and look where we are!

This year’s founders day was held at HAPPEN @ Jalan Besar. Every corner was packed with activities! From the mahjong kakis, to the loud karaoke singers, to the nostalgic arcade gamers. There was truly something for everybody.

For more information on HAPPEN, you can visit: https://happen.sg/

Alright! Now back to business.

Upon entering the event space, Wildcards was greeted with the best (and most practical) door gift - Our very own personalised shaker bottles!

Safe to say, they were wiped out in no time!

The planning committee had also set up an amazing photobooth.

Lets look at a few of those shots:

Our Magnum Alumni! aka. Old birds.

And here we have the people of Alpha Verve!

Not forgetting, the kids of Rexaz! (Who am I kidding, can you hear the old bones poppin’)

Lastly, we have Audrey and… Raihan?

Okay, that’s enough of the photobooth, it’s time for some fun and games!

In the next few photos, you can see our Wildcards superstars in action.

Here, we have the super old birds reliving their childhood with a good game of toggle sticks and clicky buttons.

The younger ones, on the other hand, prefer balls and longer sticks. 😏

Safe to say, competitive grit runs in the blood of every wildcard.

A picture may speak a thousand words, but if the picture above could show how Carmen was screaming, then you’d wish the word limit was capped at 0.

As the night progressed, we sang Wildcards a big “Happy Birthday”, with this beautiful cake customised by our very own, Bella!

Thank you committee, for planning this amazing event!

We hope that the Wildcards of yesterday, today, and the generations to come can continue to come together. After all, home is where the heart is, and our hearts are in the Wild.

Signing off,

Kim

WILDCARDS X ULU PANDAN CC (2008 - 2018)

Dear readers,

Ulu Pandan CC has been the home of the Wildcards for a memorable 10 years. There were many fond memories that each member would definitely take away. We faced many ups and downs and always looked forward to having our usual supper opposite the CC. However as of 15 August 2018, we have officially shifted to Bishan Community Club as our new home! Even though the environment changed, the people are still the same.

We would like to thank everyone for the unconditional love and support they have shown us for the past 10 years. As we move on to the next phase of Wildcards, we would like to pay tribute to the place in which all of us call home. Thank you Ulu Pandan CC for giving us a place to call home for the past decade.

10 years have passed since Wildcards have been established, and we hope that we will be able to sustain another 10, if not more years to come!
